Knowledge is Powerful in the right hands

Education is your Passport to life
— Malcolm X via my Mother

Mum has used this quote so many times that it is firmly entrenched in the minds of her Grandchildren. My first experience of what feminism was about came from my Mother.

If she didn't do what she did, me and my sisters would not be here. Literally.

Mum was born in 1950's Gambia, West Africa. At that time girls were just expected to grow up, learn to cook & clean, then marry and have babies. Girls were not sent to school.

My mum wanted more for herself, and harangued her father into allowing her to attend. Fortunately from that, all her younger sisters were sent to school and eventually law was passed that every single child must be educated.

God knows what kind of life we would have if she didn't fight to go to school.

From a young age she drummed into us the importance of knowledge, and how powerful it can be. Especially, when someone attempts to stifle or, place you where they think you should be. What is possible when you have educated yourself....and she didn't need a slogan sweatshirt to do it either.

I think the drive to work for myself, is a reaction to people attempting to 'keep me in my place' I want to exist on my own terms and the right moral compass. The freedom to be me.

What can I say about the women & young girls who rejecting feminism? They have been failed to a degree,  if they have not been told about what feminism is, and why it exists.

For me, it is about reaching gender equality.  Jobs, pay & status should not valued above who we genuinely are, and the contributions we bring to the table and, not about whether we are the right colour, sex, 'class' or if we have the 'normal' sexual preferences. It benefits men too, to allow themselves to be vulnerable and soft without judgement.

Building this business, I am working towards growth so that I can create a thriving community that will demonstrate that these are non-issues. Encourage growth and a desire to succeed for the benefit of all those working with me.

...How long will this take me?  Who knows but, I plan to be around for awhile, so I can wait.

Ciao for now.
